Okracast! Women & BBQ

Flora Payne of Payne's Bar-B-Q in Memphis, TN
We think it's time to celebrate the women behind the barbecue--the pitmasters, business owners, sauce moppers, and side makers. The one's who hold down the front of the house, and the one's who do it all. Their stories are collected on our Southern BBQ Trail, but we cherry-picked some special voices from our archives to share on Okracast.

This year's SFA oral history intern Sara Wood created two podcasts for us. Both of them are featured here and can also be accessed via our Okracast page on SoundCloud.

A 9 minute-collection of moments from women in barbecue:

A 32-minute piece that's a collection of female voices organized by state:

A big thanks to Sara for helping us feature these women as part of this year's symposium, Barbecue: An Exploration of Pitmasters, Places, Smoke and Sauce.

Take a listen and meet the women behind the 'cue.

To learn more about each of these women, you can find their oral histories on the Southern BBQ Trail.

Of note: We're honoring Desiree Robinson of Cozy Corner in Memphis, TN, and Helen Turner of Helen's Bar-B-Q in Brownsville, TN, at this year's symposium.

Happy listening!
