New Orleanians are invited to shop at the city's third Great American Bake Sale scheduled to take place Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 5312 Magazine Street. Funds raised will help Share Our Strength support after-school and summer feeding programs, a great need in Louisiana, which has the nation's highest hunger rate in children under the age of five.
Share Our Strength's Great American Bake Sale initiative is a fantastic way for SFA members to do outreach in their own communities. All you need is a location, a baker (or a team of bakers), and some publicity--anything from newspaper notices to word-of-mouth chatter. These events could grow big enough to fill a church hall, or they could be modest front-porch affairs hosted by neighborhood kids.
Either way, the proceeds go to feed children in need. According to Share Our Strength's own calculations, $1 can help provide three meals to a hungry individual; $10 can help feed a child for a month.
